War High School is located in War, West Virginia and was constructed in 1923 for white students by the Big Creek District Board of Education as a result of a 440% population growth in the preceding decade.1 War’s growth, centered around the opening of the Excelsior No. 2, Warrior and the Williams-Pocahontas mining complex, and the onset of World War I, greatly spurred demand for coal.

During the late-1920s and 1930s, the mines surrounding War were becoming exhausted. While the population decreased slightly in the 1930 census, Big Creek noted the need for a consolidated high school for the region, and the new >Big Creek High School was constructed in 1932 on the site of the former John’s Branch Coal Company, which had closed five years prior.1 The high school at War became known as the War Junior High School.
