A minor fire in at the Waldo Hotel in Clarksburg, West Virginia yesterday evening did no damage to the historic building.
Harrison County and Clarksburg fire departments responded to a report of heavy smoke and flames atop the hotel. A quick inspection revealed a construction worker burning rubber coating from copper wiring on the roof. The burning of the rubber led to the production of heavy black smoke.
The seven-story Beaux-Arts styled Waldo Hotel was constructed from 1901 to 1904 and was one of the most architecturally ornate facilities in the state. It was recognized for its lavish social events and political gatherings. After the hotel closed, it became home to a college and then as apartments. Work began to rehabilitate the abandoned building in 2014.
