God’s Ark of Safety is a church in western Maryland planned to be built to the dimensions of Noah’s Ark.

The church describes this modern-day Ark as “a sign to the world of God’s love and the soon return of Jesus.” 1 Founding Pastor Richard Greene reported having repeated dreams between April and June 1974, in which he saw a large Ark on a hillside attracting people worldwide. 2 In these dreams, he observed the “destruction and corruption” occurring globally. 1 Greene envisioned constructing a replica Ark to house an auditorium for the Frostburg Church of the Brethren, a school, a Bible college, and a medical clinic. 2

Work on the Ark on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1976. 3 By September 1978, the congregation had raised an estimated $1 million in materials, labor, and funds for the project. 2 Construction began on the cement footings to support the steel superstructure. The Ark is designed to match Noah’s Ark’s dimensions: 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high, and it is to be built in three phases. 1

By 2024, the steel superstructure for Phase I was in place. The next step is to enclose and complete this phase.

Funding for the Ark comes from donations, and there is no projected timeline for its completion. 1

I used to go by it every day as a kid. I actually thought the plan was abandoned. Nice to know it’s still on progress though. Even though I don’t live up that way anymore I would definitely make time for a trip up just to see it once it’s done.
