Hunnewell Furnace

Hunnewell Furnace is an abandoned pig iron furnace in Greenup County, Kentucky.







Hunnewell Furnace was constructed in 1845 by John Campbell, John Peters, and John Culbertson within the Hanging Rock Iron Region in Hunnewell, Greenup County, Kentucky, 1 3 a town named after the prominent businessman Walter Hunnewell. 2 Initially, pig iron was transported via ox carts to boats on the Ohio River in Greenupsburg, but once the Eastern Kentucky Railway was established, the furnace was acquired by the proprietors of the railroad. 3 In 1870, the Hunnewell Furnace was reconstructed to a height of 47 feet which allowed for a yearly production capacity of 6,000 tons of iron. It remained in operation until either 1885 or 1889. 2 3
