Olive Furnace

Olive Furnace was constructed in 1846 in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Lawrence County, Ohio.







Olive Furnace was constructed by John Campbell, William Clements, Madison Cole, John Peters, and J.L. Thompson in 1846 in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Lawrence County, Ohio. 1 2 3 4 It featured a stack 38 feet in height and a bosh ten feet wide, allowing for a daily capacity of 16 tons. 1 4

Peters was an active manager of the furnace for six years, and by 1899, the site was owned by the McGugin Company. 3

Olive was the last charcoal furnace to operate in the county, and after seven decades of service, it was sold and partly dismantled for scrap in November 1915. The furnace site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
