Roaring Run Furnace is located in Botetourt County, Virginia, and was built circa 1832. 1 It was owned by F. B. Deane of Lynchburg and Samuel C. Robinson of Richmond. Fueled by charcoal, its hot blast was powered by a waterwheel along Roaring Run Creek that drove the bellows. The stack was rebuilt in 1847 and shut down in 1854. Operations were later restarted, and the furnace ran until 1861. For 35 weeks in 1854, it produced 800 tons of iron. In the furnace’s final years, most of the iron was shipped to the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond to produce arms.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Directions: Roaring Run Furnace is located within the Roaring Run Day Use Area in the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia.
