Sandy Furnace, constructed in 1853 by the firm Young, Foster & Company, was located in the Hanging Rock Iron Region along Bolts Fork in Boyd County, Kentucky. 2 This partnership included Dan and John Young, William Foster, and Irwin Gilruth. The furnace featured a 32-foot tall stone stack and a bosh measuring 10½ feet in width. 1 During its final year of operation in 1854, Sandy Furnace produced 1,000 tons of iron, which were then transported across the county to the Big Sandy River.
