About Sunoco Gasoline Stations
Sunoco traces back to 1886, when Edward Emerson and Joseph Newton Pew secured two oil leases near Lima, Ohio and began exploring and drilling for petroleum, operating first as Peoples Natural Gas partners before shifting into oil. The venture was officially renamed the Sun Oil Company on March 17, 1890. As automobile ownership surged, Sun built its first gasoline filling station in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, which opened in 1920, marketed under the Sunoco name and its diamond-shaped, red-arrow sign. The company reorganized several times over the following decades — becoming Sun Company, Inc. in the 1970s and eventually rebranding fully as Sunoco, Inc. in 1998, while growing into one of the largest fuel distributors in the country, with over 5,000 gas station locations in more than 30 states today.
