Where do I find information on these pictures? This bowling alley picture looks so sad and lonely.

With the inauguration of United States President J With the inauguration of United States President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. today, I wanted to share a history and gallery of 43 crumbling effigies of the presidents of the United States that stand in a field near Williamsburg, Virginia. The busts are all that remains of the defunct Presidents Park which was the brainchild of Houston sculptor David Adickes first envisioned opening a private park with busts of all of the president’s heads by the fall of 2000.

Dwindling attendance and a lack of private funding for the park led to the closure of the Presidents Park prior to the completion of the bust for President Barack Obama. ¶

Coal was once king but its use as fuel for power p Coal was once king but its use as fuel for power plant have been surpassed by cheaper natural gas and cleaner wind and solar alternatives.

This generating station was proposed in the 1940s during a period of economic expansion and population growth in southeast Pennsylvania. It fully opened with three 75 MW coal-fired units and later supplemented with two 17 MW combustion turbines that could be fueled by natural gas or oil.

A combination of environmental regulations, weak power markets, and the plummeting cost of natural gas made the generating station unprofitable and it was decommissioned in 2014. More can be found at abandonedonline.net. ¶

Pictured is the Fisher Covered Bridge, a covered d Pictured is the Fisher Covered Bridge, a covered double Town Lattice bridge that carried the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County Railroad over the Lamoille River in Lamoille County, Vermont. Until its renovation in 1968 with steel stringers and a reused deck plate girder to increase its load-carrying capacity, rendering the covered superstructure purely decorative, it was the last of its type on a railroad.

The St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County Railroad provided service to rural parts of the state for over a century but a lack of stable revenue forced the closure of the line in 1994. Significant portions of the line are now being rehabilitated into a trail. ¶

St. Mark Church in Cincinnati, completed in 1916, St. Mark Church in Cincinnati, completed in 1916, was patterned after St. Marie in Trastevere and St. Marie in Cosmedio, Italy. Designed by architect Henry J. Schlacks, it featured a mild brown brick and terracotta exterior, colored to match Roman Travertine stone, a Verona facade, a roof adorned with imported orange Roman tiles, and a 130-foot-tall campanile.

St. Mark closed in 2010 and the property has languished ever since. ¶

Textile mills once dominated the New England lands Textile mills once dominated the New England landscape in the late 19th and early 20th century. A combination of cheaper labor and increased mechanization caused the industry to shift its factories to the South. Subsequently, the companies that remained in New England did not bother to invest in technological improvements to their production lines.

Built between 1860-64, the George Gilbert Manufacturing Company constructed four now-abandoned textile mills and company town along the Ware River deep in the rolling hills of northern Massachusetts. The factory was in decline by the turn of the century and the mills were operating at far less than capacity.

The damming of the Ware in 1931 lessened both the quantity and quality of the water to the point that it was no longer suitable for washing and treating the woolen cloth it manufactured nor was there enough water power to support the mills. It finally closed for good after a hurricane roared through the region in 1938 that caused damage to the remaining production facilities. ¶

Aptly nicknamed “Granny’s House,” it is comprised of a circa 1840 Colonial-style residence filled with furnishings and antiques, a separate residence, and a garage.
