Raccoon Furnace

The Raccoon Furnace is an abandoned pig iron furnace in the Hanging Rock Iron Region in Greenup County, Kentucky.


The Raccoon Furnace, constructed in 1833 by D. Trimble and J.T. Withrow, was located in the Hanging Rock Iron Region, approximately six miles south of Greenup, Kentucky. 1 This furnace featured a 35-foot tall stack and a bosh that was 10½ feet wide. In the year 1873, it successfully produced 1,467 tons of iron. However, its operations came to a halt around 1884 following an explosion that severely damaged the stack.

Directions: Raccoon Furnace can be seen along KY Route 2 in Greenup County, Kentucky.
