The abandoned Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in south

The abandoned Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in southern West Virginia is probably home to more ghostly tales than any other place in the region—but they are just that, stories told as truths that have at times come at the expense of Native Americans.

In reality, Michell Clay, the nephew of Henry Clay, and his family settled along the Bluestone River in 1775. The area had been settled previously by the Shawnees who had fished in the nearby Bluestone River and grew corn in the valley.

In August 1783, after Clay had harvested his crop of a small grain and left to hunt game, a marauding party of 11 Native Americans crept to the edge of the field and shot one of his sons, Bartley, dead. The discharge of the gun alarmed the rest of the family. In the ensuing melee, a daughter was killed while another son was captured. After returning to the house, Mitchell came across his two dead children. He formed a posse and pursued the Native Americans, eventually overtaking them in Boone County. A number of them were killed but some escaped to Chillicothe where they burned the remaining child at the stake.

Reliable, verifiable sources have also not indicated any ancient burial grounds at Lake Shawnee, nor was there a massacre between two opposing families. While there have also been the usual accidents and drownings in the park's swimming pool, there have been no anomalies.

In 1926, entrepreneur C.T. Snidow acquired land around Lake Shawnee near Princeton and began developing a small amusement park which soon became popular for families of coal miners that resided in the area.

By the 1960s, Lake Shawnee was dilapidated and proposals were floated to sell the property to the state for conversion into a state-operated park or as a Boy Scout center. It eventually closed in 1967 by order of the local health department. ¶

As people celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ today, I thought I'd share some photos of a quaint c. 1899 Victorian Folk-style chapel in rural West Virginia. It's not entirely disused. A donation platter inside contains crisp bills that are used for the continued maintenance of the church. ¶

Prior to the industrialization of West Virginia’

Prior to the industrialization of West Virginia’s New River Gorge, the area was characterized by a few settlers dependent upon subsistence farming and some trading. The arrival of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway along the New River in 1872 led to the transformation of the New River valley into one of the world’s most important coal mining regions. As the railways were extended up into nearby valleys, including Laurel and Piney Creeks, coal became more accessible. The coal rush was on.

Back in 2009, I spent a lot of time inside the now-demolished Hudepohl Brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was initially located in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and later relocated to the Herman Leckman Brewing Company in the Queensgate neighborhood. Hudepohl vacated the factory in 1987 when it merged with the Schoenling Brewing Company.

One of the most ornate schools in Ohio is on its way to being restored for new uses. I am happy that this is being restored after many years of neglect as so many other schools in the state have been demolished so quickly after closure because of a more recent state law that requires school districts to fund the demolition of the predecessor facility if they opt for a new structure (Ohio Rev. Code § 325.19). ¶

Many years ago, I hiked out to these derelict cabooses, passenger cars, and miscellaneous cars along the former Louisville & Southern Railway Lexington to Lawrenceburg Division in central Kentucky. They were stored for potential reuse and renovation by the Bluegrass Railroad Museum but at the time, they were inaccessible because of a bridge that needed repairs. Today, the museum runs excursion trains out to the eastern approach of the Young's High Bridge, passing by these mothballed trains and the old spur to the now-demolished Tyrone Power Plant. ¶

The Norfolk & Western Railroad (N&W) Ohio Extensio

The Norfolk & Western Railroad (N&W) Ohio Extension along Twelvepole Creek was part of the original alignment of the N&W between Lenore, West Virginia, and Ohio. It was replaced by the 59-mile Big Sandy Low-Grade Line through Mingo and Wayne counties and much of the original Ohio Extension was dismantled in 1933. Much of it was converted for automobile use and includes several tunnels and many bridges. Photos in this post include the Dingess Tunnel, several bridges, the Breeden Tunnel, and depots at Dunlow and Lavalette. ¶

This is the Bethlehem Methodist Church that was organized and built in 1892 in rural Greenup County, Kentucky. Thomas McNeal donated the property for the structure and Hattie Bryson collected funds for the structure’s construction, which was erected by James W. West and Maurice Edmund Cartwright. The church was later known as the Old Star of Bethlehem Church. ¶

Years ago, I was scouting aerial images of northern Kentucky and came across the Richwood Tahoe Railroad, a two-foot narrow-gauge passenger railroad around the Columbia Sussex headquarters. At the time, it featured the state's only working steam locomotive.

Whether because of Columbia Sussex's contraction because of the 2008 economic recession or because of a lack of charitable events that the railroad depended upon, the Richwood Tahoe Railroad no longer operates. ¶

Years ago, I came across the Kanawha Falls Bridge

Years ago, I came across the Kanawha Falls Bridge in central West Virginia while traveling through some one-lane gravel and dirt back roads. Turning a corner, all of a sudden there was a wide, two-lane bridge that connected over to the Midland Trail (US Route 60).

Fast forward to more recent times and this 1,000-foot span has been closed to automobile traffic since 2018 because of a failed steel beam. Plans had been in place to rehabilitate this historic bridge, but the extensive work that is now required may shelve those plans and keep this crossing closed for good. ¶

Recently, I got to visit the West Virginia Central

Recently, I got to visit the West Virginia Central Railroad (WVC) shops and storage yard located in Belington, West Virginia. The WVC took over the CSX Tygart Subdivision in 1997 and today manages freight and excursion passenger operations through some of the most rugged and scenic areas of the Mountain State.

These are photos of the West Virginia Central No. 92, which was built as a General Motors’ Electro Motive Division E8A in September 1950, and the West Virginia Central No. 201. ¶

This is a photo of the disused Glady Tunnel under Shavers Mountain in West Virginia. The 1,000-foot tunnel was built for the Coal & Iron Railway in 1903 and remained in use until 1985 when the C&I's ultimate successor, Chessie, abandoned the railroad between Greenbrier Junction and Durbin. It coincided with the abandonment of the C&O Greenbrier Division south of Cass. ¶
