Mt. Savage Furnace

The Mt. Savage Furnace was constructed in 1848 in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Carter County, Kentucky.







Mt. Savage Furnace was constructed in 1848 by R.M. Biggs and John Fauson, a German stonemason, in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Carter County, Kentucky. 1 2 It had a capacity of 8½ tons per day and operated until the start of the Civil War, 1 with pig iron hauled by ox teams to the Ohio River for shipment. After the war, it was operated by the Lexington & Carter County Mining Company from September 1870 to 1874. 2 It was later reopened by H.W. Bates of the Mount Savage Furnace Company and operated from 1877 to 1880. 1 2 During this final period, the furnace’s capacity was increased to 13½ tons per day.
