In an acknowledgment of an era passed, the twin coal-fired power plants at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Indiana, met their demise.
These giants, silent since 1992, were methodically dismantled between 2011 and 2012 at the cost of $1.1 million. The careful deconstruction yielded 335 tons of scrap, the removal of two 120,000 and 145,000-square-foot structures, and the demolition of their accompanying 180-foot smokestacks, symbols of industrial might now rendered obsolete.
The demolition of the smokestacks, the last sentinels of the power plant, has been captured on video.
