Back in April 2023, I was able to step back inside Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Tennessee. Formerly a prison, it has been transformed into a tourist destination.
Back in April 2023, I was able to step back inside Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Tennessee. Formerly a prison, it has been transformed into a tourist destination where visitors can explore through guided or self-guided tours, participate in paranormal investigations, and visit a museum. Additionally, the site includes a distillery and a restaurant.
My previous visit to the penitentiary was to photograph it a few years after its closure. It was eerily quiet and abandoned, marked by a haunting atmosphere where the only sound was the echo of one’s own voice.
I am gratified that a thoughtful investor recognized the importance of safeguarding a significant aspect of Tennessee’s history that serves as a reminder of the diverse and sometimes difficult paths that have shaped our community and identity. It underscores the value of remembering and understanding all facets of our past, even those that are fraught with adversity.
