It’s rise to prominence and its sudden collapse of its prized magazine division was sudden, and today, portions of the long-abandoned complex are being razed for green space.
Deerton, Michigan is an unincorporated community in Alger County that was founded in 1882 when the Detroit, Mackinac & Marquette Railroad constructed a station for a lumbering camp. A post office opened in 1922, and in 1926, a small school was constructed at the junction of Deerton-Onota Road. Today, not much is left in the community – most of the residences are abandoned, although the school still operates.
Dubbed the “ghost ship” by kayakers and explorers for years, the USS Sachem and USS Phenakite stand abandoned on a small creek just yards from the Ohio River in northern Kentucky. The story behind this unassuming vessel fascinated me, given its historical importance, it remains forgotten.
Linwood Public School is located in the Linwood neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio and was constructed in 1929. It was closed in 2005.
Snaking through the southern reaches of Floyd County, Kentucky is the remains of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Long Fork Subdivision that connected to some of the most prosperous coal mines in the state.

I had several relatives who worked for that company–my paternal grandfather was plant manager for the printing plant and he was there to close the factory down. His sister, who was a "spinster" in that she never married, was in a management position on the editorial level for the magazine and divided her time between Springfield, Chicago and New York—-she was a woman who was "ahead of her time." Her name was Agnes Garrity. She was a neat lady, she died in the early 70s well up into her 90s.
