The Rubber Bowl, located in Akron, Ohio, was a historic stadium that was a unique place in the city’s history. Constructed primarily for football games, it gained its name due to Akron’s prominence in the rubber industry. The stadium’s distinctive design, featuring a bowl-shaped structure, made it a focal point for sports events, concerts, and other community gatherings.
Built in 1940 as a project of the Works Progress Administration, the Rubber Bowl mainly served as the home stadium for the University of Akron’s Zips football team. Additionally, it was used by Kent State University for their Golden Flashes football team, and the Cleveland Rams of the National Football League played 19 preseason games there. It also hosted around 1,500 football games for various high schools.
Due to its aging infrastructure and distance from the university campus, the University of Akron ceased using the facility in 2008. The deteriorating condition of the Rubber Bowl ultimately led to its demolition in 2018.

Was there when my alma mater, Buchtel High School, won its first football city championship. And, saw many Akron U games there, including a standing room only Acme Zip game on the early 70s. Great place to see a game.
I saw the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty at a show there in 1986…
