Buffalo Furnace

The Buffalo Furnace is an abandoned pig iron furnace in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Greenup County, Kentucky.







The Buffalo Furnace, situated in the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Greenup County, Kentucky, was established by H. Hollister and Ross in 1851. 1 This furnace featured a 36½-foot tall stack and had the capacity to produce 15 tons of iron each day. At its peak, it employed 150 workers. Throughout the Civil War, it served as a significant supplier to the Union Army. The operation of Buffalo Furnace ceased in 1875.
