Last month, it was announced that the shuttered Merchants Ice and Cold Storage tower in Louisville, Kentucky, would be redeveloped into an office building with ground-floor retail space and a potential rooftop bar or restaurant. This follows on the news that Ferncliff Distillery would occupy the cold storage building on Lampton Street and that the Trellis Brewing Company would occupy the former Schaefer-Meyer Brewing and Frank Fehr Brewing complex on Logan Street.

Plans for the redevelopment of the large industrial parcel in the Smoketown neighborhood date to the early 2000s when it was proposed that the tower and brewery site be redeveloped into a residential and retail development dubbed Louisville Lofts. Another proposal added senior housing into the mix. More recently, a group of local investors headed by Mitchell Kersting and partners James Duffy, Yong Cha, and Christopher Wirth purchased the site intending to bring the derelict site back to life. With momentum on their side in one of Louisville’s emerging neighborhoods, it is expected that the Merchants Ice and Cold Storage site will serve as a catalyst for other development projects.
